Instrument Tech Assistant (Union Position)

The Instrument Tech Assistant is an entry-level union position designed as a two-year apprenticeship program. This role supports the installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical metering systems, communication equipment, and utility infrastructure. This position places a strong emphasis on developing technical knowledge in electrical systems, metering technology, and utility operations. The ideal candidate is motivated to learn, able to work both independently and as part of a team, and committed to maintaining safety and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of metering systems, communication equipment, and utility infrastructure
  • Apply and develop technical knowledge of electrical principles, metering systems, and system operations
  • Support testing, calibration, inspection, and diagnosis of electrical and communication systems
  • Learn and interpret technical standards, specifications, and drawings
  • Utilize company software and Microsoft Office tools for documentation and communication
  • Interact with members/customers to explain services, usage, and rates
  • Perform work on energized equipment in accordance with safety standards and training

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in electrical technology, electronics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience in a technical or utility-related role
  • Foundational knowledge of electrical principles (voltage, current, resistance, and power) preferred
  • Strong interest in developing technical skills in electrical and utility systems
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and procedures
  • Willingness to learn and complete a structured apprenticeship program
  • Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Work performed both indoors and outdoors, including in potentially hazardous environments
  • May require lifting, climbing, and working at heights
  • Must be able to safely handle tools and equipment used in electrical and utility work
  • Additional Information:
    This is a union position with a structured 2-year apprenticeship program designed to provide hands-on training and career advancement opportunities within the utility field, with a strong focus on building technical expertise.
